A Minneapolis street permit stops counting during a snow emergency

Local haulers do the work; we hold the contract, own the problems, and send one bill. Minneapolis issues street use permits for dumpsters only to licensed contractors working with City-licensed haulers, and the permit isn't valid during street cleaning or a snow emergency.

Short answer

  • A Minneapolis street use permit for a dumpster or storage container goes to a licensed contractor, runs 30, 60, or 90 days, and requires City-licensed solid waste haulers, wrecking contractors, or storage container companies.
  • The container sits within 12 inches of the curb, 30 feet from the corner on a corner lot, with the company name, phone number, and reflective materials displayed, and it is covered outside work hours.
  • Street use permits are not valid during street cleaning or snow emergencies, and a container on a parkway needs a separate permit from the Park Board.
  • 14 providers in our provider network have completed jobs in Minneapolis.

Licensed haulers and moving days

A Minneapolis container has two clocks: the permit term and the city's plow and sweeper calendar. We keep your sites on one account and answer for both. When a pickup gets missed, we contact the hauler the same business day.

One dumpster with a licensed hauler and a contractor who knows the permit is a job for them. The hauler, broker, and provider network page shows where we fit, and the Minnesota page has state rules.

Figures are counts of completed deliveries, providers, and accounts in this window from our records, as of October 2026. Roll-off deliveries are containers delivered. Portable toilet deliveries are units placed, not orders. A company that completed both services is counted in both service rows, so those rows are not a split of the provider total. The counts are not a promise that every address is covered. Front-load service, compactors, and balers are not in these counts. The sanitation figure adds portable toilets and hand-wash units placed. Where a restroom-trailer count is shown, it is units placed.

The Minneapolis street use permit

The city's street use permit covers dumpsters and storage containers placed in the street in front of or next to the permitted property. Only a licensed contractor can apply, Public Works has to approve it, and permits are issued for 30, 60, or 90 days. The container must go on with a City-licensed solid waste hauler, wrecking contractor, or storage container company, so a customer who found a bin on their own may have to switch. All parking restrictions still apply, fees are in a separate schedule, and Development Review takes questions at 612-673-3000.

Placement, marking, and covers

On a corner lot the container goes at least 30 feet from the corner, and in every case within 12 inches of the curb. Each container shows the company name and phone number and carries reflective materials, and it has to be covered during non-work hours. A dumpster or storage container on a parkway needs its own permit from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, so a boulevard job means two applications.

Recycling at commercial buildings

The city's business recycling page says all commercial buildings in Minneapolis must have recycling. The owner needs a written recycling plan and has to give tenants written recycling information every year. Businesses may contract with any licensed hauler, which the city's page links to a list of. The page, last updated March 6, 2026, mentions no penalties.

Snow emergencies and the Minneapolis calendar

NWS Twin Cities published a write-up of the March 14 and 15, 2026 storm. Census permit data shows apartments climbing while houses hold.

    The other void period

The same page says permits are not valid during street cleaning either. Check the city calendar before booking a delivery on a block.
