San Antonio

In San Antonio the truck carries the city permit

Local haulers do the work; we hold the contract, own the problems, and send one bill. San Antonio permits commercial haulers vehicle by vehicle for twelve months at a time, and registers companies before they can work in the right-of-way.

Last reviewed October 27, 2026.

Short answer

  • Any hauler of commercial solid waste in San Antonio needs a Commercial Solid Waste Hauler Vehicle Permit, including haulers with exemptions.
  • Permits last twelve months from issuance, and vehicles of 7,000 pounds or more carry proof of liability insurance.
  • A company must register in the city's Right of Way Management system, with insurance and a performance bond, before it works in the right-of-way.
  • 22 providers in our provider network have completed jobs in San Antonio.

Permits that follow the equipment

In San Antonio a hauler's permit is tied to each truck, and a contractor's right to work in the street is tied to a registered company. We hold every site on one account and answer for them. When a pickup gets missed, we contact the hauler the same business day.

In San Antonio the paperwork rides on the truck and the company more than on the container. Ask any hauler for its current vehicle permit before the first delivery, and ask again when a permit year turns over, because a lapsed truck can stall a swap. If the container has to sit in the street, the right-of-way registration, insurance and bond need to be in place before anyone schedules a drop. Line those up during preconstruction and the first week on site goes a lot smoother.

On one site with a registered hauler, there's no reason to add us. The hauler, broker, and provider network page shows where we fit, and the Texas page has state rules.

Figures are counts of completed deliveries, providers, and accounts in this window from our records, as of October 2026. Roll-off deliveries are containers delivered. Portable toilet deliveries are units placed, not orders. A company that completed both services is counted in both service rows, so those rows are not a split of the provider total. The counts are not a promise that every address is covered. Front-load service, compactors, and balers are not in these counts. The sanitation figure adds portable toilets and hand-wash units placed. Where a restroom-trailer count is shown, it is units placed.

The commercial hauler vehicle permit

The city's solid waste department requires a Commercial Solid Waste Hauler Vehicle Permit to haul commercial solid waste anywhere in the city, and the application is required of every commercial hauler, including those with exemptions. The fee is annual and set by gross vehicle weight, paid in quarterly installments due May 1, August 1, November 1, and February 1, and it isn't prorated. A vehicle list form goes with the application, and the city may inspect a vehicle to judge its suitability. Article IV of Chapter 14 of the city code sets the operating rules, and noncompliance can bring fines.

Working in the San Antonio right-of-way

Public Works' Right-of-Way Management division requires a company to register in the city's RoWM system before it takes out permits. Registration carries a fee, and the city requires liability, auto, and workers' compensation insurance plus a performance bond, either one covering unlimited permits or one per permit address. Violations are charged by the day until the city's infrastructure is restored. The permit pages list excavation, project, lane and sidewalk closure, and parking restriction permits, and none names dumpsters, so confirm with ROW Management which one a container needs.
