For sustainability, facilities and procurement teams

Waste data for your ESG report

If your company reports on waste, you need tons by site and by stream, and the records behind them. For the commercial dumpsters, compactors and balers we arrange, ask and we assemble that data from the hauler and facility tickets, across every site and market on your agreement.

What we can provide

The waste data menu

Six things you can ask for. Most of it comes from records that already exist for every pickup. Your team decides what goes into the report you publish.

  1. 01

Waste data by site and period

For each location and reporting period:

    • Tons by stream: trash, cardboard, recycling, organics and other streams where a site has them
    • Pickup counts and frequency
    • Tons diverted, tons landfilled and tons sent to waste-to-energy
    • The diversion rate
    • One combined view across sites and markets
  2. 02

    Records and proof

The paper behind each number, so a reviewer can trace it:

    • Scale tickets or weight records per haul
    • Facility receipts showing where each load went
    • Contamination or rejected load notes, when the facility reports them
  3. 03

    Data for your framework

The same figures, laid out so you can use them when completing GRI, SASB, IFRS S2 or TCFD, CDP and UN SDG reporting. See the framework table. We do not certify or assure reports.

  4. 04Estimate, on request

    Hauling and climate

Ask about an estimate of hauling related emissions for your Scope 3 work. It would be an estimate based on your tons and haul activity, not a measured or verified figure.

  5. 05

    Advice that raises diversion

Help choosing container sizes, pickup frequency, balers and compactors and which recycling streams to separate, so more material is diverted and fewer hauls run. See baler vs compactor.

  6. 06Ask Keith

    Our company disclosures

If your supplier review asks about Detritus itself, ask Keith what we can share about our own company.

Sample report

What a site by site report lays out

A sample layout with the fields only. A real report is filled from the tickets for your sites, and only with fields the local hauler and facility can support.

Diversion rate
  • Diversion rateTons diverted divided by total tons, for the site and for all sites together.
  • Waste-to-energyListed on its own line. GRI 306 reports incineration with energy recovery as disposal, not as diversion.1
  • Weight basisWhether a figure came from a scale or was estimated, so your reviewer knows which is which.

How weight is measured

Not every pickup crosses a scale on its own

A compactor receiver or a roll-off is hauled by itself, so its load is weighed at the facility and gets its own scale ticket. Scale tickets decide tonnage.

A front-load truck often empties many containers on one route before it is weighed, so one site's share of that load may not have its own ticket. For those sites, the tons may have to be estimated from the container size and the pickups.

Ask how each of your sites will be measured before service starts, and have the report say whether each figure is weighed or estimated.

Send Keith your site list and the period you report on. He will tell you what each site can include before service starts.

Frameworks

Where the waste data gets used

In general terms, what each framework asks about waste and what you can ask us for. Check the current version of the framework you report under.

FrameworkWhat it asks about wasteWhat you can ask us for
GRI 306: Waste 2020Waste generated, waste diverted from disposal and waste directed to disposal, in metric tons and by composition1Tons by stream, split into diverted, landfilled and waste-to-energy, by site
SASB StandardsIndustry based metrics for 77 industries, now maintained by the ISSB. Whether waste is one depends on your industry2The tons and rates your industry's metric asks for, where the records support them
IFRS S2 and TCFDClimate related risks and opportunities, including greenhouse gas emissions. IFRS S2 builds on the TCFD recommendations3Tons and haul activity you can use in your emissions work, and an estimate on request
GHG Protocol Scope 3Category 5 is waste generated in operations4Tons by stream and where each went, the inputs that category is usually estimated from
CDPOne integrated questionnaire covering several environmental issues since 20245Tons by stream and the diversion rate for any answer that touches waste
UN SDG 12.5By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse6Tons recycled and the diversion rate, period over period

This is data you can use when completing these frameworks. We do not certify, audit or assure reports, we do not claim a report meets any framework, and we do not file anything for you.

How it works

From the first pickup to your report

The records build up as service runs. You ask when you need them.

  1. Set up service

We source local providers for each site, and confirm what each one can report and how it is weighed.

  2. Tickets are collected

Every haul leaves a record with the hauler and the facility: a scale ticket, a weight record or a receipt.

  3. The report is assembled on request

Ask, and we assemble tons by stream, tons diverted, tons landfilled and the rate, by site and across sites.

  4. You report it

Your team puts the data into your own ESG or sustainability report, with the tickets behind it.

What to ask for

Ask us for these

Put this list in your request. Availability is confirmed site by site when you set up service, because it depends on what each local hauler and facility records.

  • Tonnage by site and streamFor each location and each reporting period.
  • Pickup count and frequencyHow often each container was emptied.
  • Diverted, landfilled and waste-to-energy tonsEach on its own line, with the diversion rate.
  • Facility receipts and scale ticketsCopies of the records behind the tons.
  • Weight basis per siteWhether each site's figures are weighed or estimated.
  • Contamination notesRejected or downgraded loads, when the facility reports them.

Starting from scratch? Our waste audit template shows what each site throws away today, and the diversion rate calculator turns tons into a rate.

Common questions

ESG waste reporting questions

Can Detritus provide waste data for our ESG or sustainability report?

Yes, for the commercial dumpsters, compactors and balers we arrange. Ask, and we assemble the data from the hauler and facility tickets: tons by stream, tons diverted, tons landfilled and the rate, by site. What each site can include is confirmed when you set up service.

Where do the numbers come from?

From the records for each pickup: scale tickets, weight records and facility receipts. Scale tickets decide tonnage.

Are front-load containers weighed?

Not always on their own. A front-load truck often empties many containers on one route before it is weighed, so a site's tons may be estimated. Ask how each site will be measured, and have the report say whether each figure is weighed or estimated.

Can we get one report across all our sites?

Yes. Every site is on one agreement and one invoice, and the data can be assembled site by site and for all sites together.

Is the report certified or assured?

No. We supply the data and the records behind it. We do not certify, audit or assure reports, and we do not file them. Your team, and any assurance provider you use, decide how the data is used.

Which frameworks can the data be used for?

It is data you can use when completing GRI 306, SASB industry metrics, IFRS S2 or TCFD climate disclosures, CDP and UN SDG reporting. We do not claim a report meets any framework.

Does waste-to-energy count as diversion?

Under GRI 306, incineration with energy recovery is reported as disposal, not as diversion. We list waste-to-energy tons on their own line where the facility reports them.

Can you estimate the emissions from our waste?

Ask Keith. Any figure would be an estimate based on your tons and haul activity, for your own Scope 3 work, not a measured or verified number.

Who do I talk to?

Keith Bonneau is our account executive for commercial dumpsters and compactors. Call him at (978) 612-6647 or email k.bonneau@detritus.us.

One agreement, every site, and the data behind it

Local providers do the hauling, we hold the agreement and send one invoice, and the tickets are there when your report is due.
