Site services and waste for schools and universities

A campus runs on the academic calendar. Renovation crowds into the summer, move-out fills every container in a week, and commencement brings more people than the buildings were built for. We source roll-offs, event restrooms, hand wash stations and fencing from local providers in the markets we serve, and schedule them around your calendar. Availability varies by market.

The academic year

When a campus needs what

A typical calendar, not yours. Your term dates, events and project schedule move the bars. What matters is that the peaks stack up, so the orders should be in before the season starts.

The services

What a campus usually orders

Local providers do the work; we hold the contract, own the problems, and send one bill.

Sizing restrooms for a game or a ceremony? Start with the event restroom planning guide, which sizes on how many people are on site at the same time.

Planning the summer now?

Send the projects, the move-out dates and the events. We source the containers, restrooms and fence and set the schedule with you.

Construction on campus

Projects next to classrooms and residence halls

Campus projects often run beside occupied buildings. The contractor's site logistics plan sets where equipment goes. These are the rules that usually shape it.

29 CFR 1926.51(c)

Restrooms for the crew

On construction work, the minimum is one toilet for 20 employees or less, then one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers at 20 or more.1 A crew restroom keeps workers out of the school's buildings. See the OSHA portable toilet guide.

Upper floors

Chute the debris

An enclosed chute into the roll-off keeps debris off stairs and out of hallways. See trash chutes.

Diversion

Sort what can be recycled

Separate containers for metal, wood or concrete can raise construction diversion. See construction recycling.

Sustainability data

Waste data your sustainability office can use

Colleges and universities can report to STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System run by AASHE.2 Its waste credit asks for weights, so the records behind every haul matter.

STARS 3.0, credit OP 12: Waste Generation and Recovery

  • 12.1Non-hazardous waste generated per person
  • 12.2Non-hazardous waste generated per square meter
  • 12.3Percentage of non-hazardous waste diverted from disposal
  • 12.4Percentage of construction and demolition waste diverted from disposalReported separately from 12.1 to 12.3

AASHE asks for waste in metric tons, from the most recent annual data within the previous three years.2

  1. 01

    Data you can use

For the containers and compactors we arrange, ask us for tons by stream, tons diverted and tons landfilled, from hauler and facility tickets. Your office decides what goes into the report.

  2. 02

    Weighed or estimated

A roll-off or compactor is weighed on its own. A front-load route may not be, so ask how each site is measured. See ESG waste reporting.

  3. 03

    Food waste rules

Rhode Island's law covers educational entities making 30 tons or more of organic waste a year, since January 1, 2023, when an authorized composting facility with capacity is within 15 miles.3 See recycling laws.

We do not certify, audit or assure reports, and we do not claim a report meets STARS or any other framework. Check a rate with the diversion rate calculator.

Buying

Procurement for public and private institutions

Public districts and state universities buy under their own rules. Our registrations and onboarding documents are published, and the order path is the same for one event or a year of projects.

  1. 01

    Vendor setup

Our accounts team completes supplier registrations and portal enrollments in your system. See vendor onboarding.

  2. 02

    Public buyers

SAM.gov registration active, with our identifiers and how to buy on government contracting.

  3. 03

    Your paperwork

Send the purchase order. Your PO number can be held on each site record, so it follows the work.

  4. 04

    One invoice

Charges by site or project on one invoice, which can be split by entity, region or cost center.

Writing a bid? The waste services RFP template and multi-site procurement show how a program across many sites is scoped and priced.

How it works with Detritus

One request for the whole calendar

You get one point of contact. A local provider delivers, services and removes the equipment.

  1. You send the calendar

Projects, move-out and move-in dates, events and the buildings involved.

  2. We source local providers

Roll-offs, restrooms, hand wash and fence from providers in your market, quoted together. Availability varies by market.

  3. Delivery before the date

Containers and units set where your team wants them.

  4. Service and removal

Swaps when you call, service during long events, and pickup when the season is over.

What to tell us

The more of this we have on the first call, the faster the quote.

  • The campus address and the buildings involved
  • Project scopes and dates
  • Move-out and move-in dates, and how many halls
  • Events: date, location and expected attendance
  • Where containers and units can sit
  • Your purchasing rules and PO process

Common questions

School and university questions

When should a campus order summer renovation dumpsters?

Before the season starts. Summer projects across a region compete for the same containers, so send the project list and dates in the spring.

Can you provide dumpsters for move-out?

Yes. We source temporary roll-offs from local providers and schedule swaps and removal around the move-out dates. Availability varies by market.

What do we need for commencement or a home game?

Usually portable restrooms or restroom trailers, accessible units, hand wash stations and fencing. Size the restrooms on how many people are on site at the same time.

Can you provide waste data for STARS reporting?

For the containers and compactors we arrange, ask us for tons by stream, tons diverted and tons landfilled from hauler and facility tickets. It is data you can use. We do not certify reports or claim they meet STARS.

Can public schools and state universities buy from you?

Our SAM.gov registration is active, and our accounts team completes supplier registrations in your system. Send the purchase order on your paperwork.

How do I get a quote?

Call sales at (888) 588-2607 or request a quote with the campus, the projects, the events and the dates.
